The Workers Letting A.I. Do Their Jobs
Since the release of generative A.I., questions have been raised about how it would change our lives and jobs. Now, many software developers who were early adopters of the technology have outsourced so many tasks that they barely program at all.
Clive Thompson, who writes about technology and science, interviewed about 75 software developers at major tech companies, small businesses and start-ups. He explains what it looks like when programmers invite A.I. to help them do their jobs.

TL;DR
Thompson’s central claim: in the last 6 months — accelerating in the last 3 months — a majority of working software developers have outsourced most of their day-to-day coding to AI agents. Some are writing zero code at all. The transition crosses regional consulting shops, two-person startups, and the big platforms (Google, Amazon, Microsoft) — though at very different paces.
Four substantive findings the wiki should weave into existing concepts:
- Productivity gradient by company size: two-person startups report ~20× faster delivery (a customer feature that took a full day now takes ~30 min); Google reports ~10% overall speedup despite ~40–50% of code being AI-written. Mechanism: corporate “metabolism” rate-limits how much speed translates to value. Direct corroboration of the micro-productivity-trap from the individual developer’s vantage and the vendor-engineering vantage simultaneously.
- The construction-workers-to-architects shift: developers report feeling “like Steve Jobs” — “bring me nine designs of the iPod and I’ll pick the best one”. The technical work that defined the profession migrates to the agent; the work that remains is communication, taste, and spec-clarity. Direct operator-vocabulary statement of the durable-skills frame.
- A new empirical anchor for ai-employment-effects: Thompson cites Erik Brynjolfsson at Stanford for an analysis of job postings showing software-developer hires down 16% — happening now, before the tools are “sprinting”.
- The 1980s productivity-paradox parallel: Thompson invokes the historical pattern — computers in the 1980s didn’t translate to corporate productivity until firms reorganised around them (email replacing typewritten memos, regional offices sharing documents). His prediction: real industrial impact of AI coding will be “longer than we think”. Companies that lay off staff thinking AI will replace them often rehire within 6 months because it didn’t work. This is the micro-productivity-trap thesis from a historical-pattern-matching vantage — independent of the consulting-firm sources (Bain / McKinsey / Thoughtworks) that name the same trap from inside engagements.
What was actually ingested

The history-of-abstractions framing
Thompson opens his expository arc with a 50-60-year history of programming, framed as successive layers of abstraction:
- 1940s: ENIAC — a team of women physically rewires the machine for each new problem.
- 1950s–60s: programming languages let you type instructions instead of rewiring; but every memory cell is explicit. “Like juggling 900 balls just to get it to do the most basic piece of math.”
- 1970s onward: each decade adds another abstraction layer — “things just kept on getting a little easier every decade.”
- Now: AI agents — the language of the spec is just English. The abstraction is now over the whole task, not over a syntactic unit.
The framing is canonical-historical (Thompson is a technology historian by training) and locates AI coding inside a continuous trend, not as a singular discontinuity. This is the continuity vantage on the AI-coding transition — useful counterweight to the wiki’s existing phase-change framings (Karpathy’s Software 3.0, Nika 2025’s December-2025-phase-change).
The Socratic-dialogue technique
A specific operator mechanism Thompson surfaces from multiple developers: when starting a new feature, ask the agent to interview you about how the feature should work. “Okay, ask me questions about how this software feature should work.” The agent’s clarifying questions become the spec-elicitation; the developer’s answers become the spec.
Workflow:
- Developer states the goal in plain English.
- Agent asks clarifying questions (data flow / edge cases / language / dependencies).
- Developer answers; agent now has a structured spec.
- Agent spawns subagents to implement / test / fix / retest in a loop.
- Agent returns with code + tests + results when the implementation passes.
- Developer reviews the finished work, not the in-progress code.
The technique is structurally identical to Böckeler’s feed-forward harness with the agent itself driving the feed-forward elicitation, rather than the developer pre-loading the prompt with conventions. New wiki vocabulary candidate: agent-driven spec elicitation.
Manu Ebert’s “10 Commandments” — operator-side rules-file in the wild
Manu Ebert, a developer at the startup Hyperspell, reports keeping a “10 Commandments” file the agent must consult before any action. Features Thompson highlights:
- Uppercase, repetitive language: “like they’re yelling at it”. The repetition appears designed to “hypnotize the AI agent by sheer repetition”.
- High-stakes emotional framing: “failure to do these tests is unacceptable and embarrassing” / “if you don’t do these tests, I will be fired”.
- Imperative voice: “You must test the code in this way or that. You must not do that.”
This is the wiki’s first operator-side worked example of a rules-file in production — the practitioner-author analog of the OpenAI Codex golden-principles file, the Böckeler enhanced-lint-messages-as-prompt-injection pattern, and CLAUDE.md / AGENTS.md as conventionalised in the wiki’s existing agent-harness vocabulary. Ebert’s file is plain Markdown / plain text; the wiki’s existing sources document the pattern in three different industrial settings, and Ebert’s case is the first individual-developer-at-a-small-startup worked example.
Thompson’s mechanistic explanation for why emotional/stern language works:
“Large language models, they’re language machines. And so, they understand the meaning of language based on the company it keeps. So, if they see the word embarrassing, they understand that ‘that word comes from a bad neighborhood — there’s bad things there and there’s embarrassing, humiliation.’ That just helps raise the stakes so that it grasps the import of those words.”
The explanation is distributional semantics applied to prompt design — a clear lay-vocabulary articulation of how LLMs metabolise affective language. The pattern is convergent with Böckeler’s “enhanced lint messages as good prompt injection” — both name the same mechanism (edit the text the agent reads to embed meta-instruction) from different operator vantages.
The productivity gradient — startups 20× vs Google 10%
Two specific datapoints from Thompson’s reporting:

The gap is mechanistic, not anecdotal — Thompson’s account locates the difference in organisational metabolism: Google has 20-year-old codebases, change-management overhead, multi-team interaction surface, and customer commitments that small startups don’t. “At a small startup, you know, 100% of the lines of code are written by AI. At Google, it’s more like maybe 40% or 50%. And it has sped up their overall metabolism by really only like 10%.” The Google interlocutors frame this as still substantial — “10% for a company our size, that’s a huge win”.
The signal for the micro-productivity-trap: the trap operates at multiple scales simultaneously. A two-person startup escapes the trap by having no metabolism to slow it down; a Google-sized firm can only achieve a fraction of the per-task speedup because the surrounding work isn’t redesigned. Thompson’s 20× / 10% ratio is the cleanest single empirical statement of the trap from a developer-side reporter’s vantage that the wiki holds.
The three named worries — de-skilling, jobs, and moving too fast
De-skilling
Two named instances:
- Pia Torian — “reasonably newer developer”; early-job employer required Copilot use; “hundreds of prompts a day for months”. Her self-report: “this is actually degrading my own knowledge of code. I feel like I’m losing my ability to code.”
- The senior-vs-junior code-sense worry — senior developers can spot bad AI output because they grew up writing code by hand; their concern is whether the next generation — who never write code by hand — will develop the code sense that lets them be effective reviewers of AI work.
Direct corroboration of ai-deskilling from the first-person developer’s vantage. Wiki’s prior sources on de-skilling have been observational or theoretical; Torian’s account is the first first-person worked example the wiki holds.
Jobs
Thompson cites Erik Brynjolfsson at Stanford for analysis of job postings: software-developer hires down 16% “in the last year or so”. “If that’s happening when the AI coding tools are really just going from a crawl to a walk to a run, what might happen when they’re sprinting?”
This is a new empirical anchor for ai-employment-effects — fresher than the wiki’s prior Brynjolfsson references (the 2023 customer-support equalising-effect study). It’s also Thompson’s most quantitatively-specific claim and warrants primary-source ingest (the Brynjolfsson job-postings analysis itself is the load-bearing artifact; Thompson cites it but doesn’t link a paper in the audio).
Thompson’s structural framing of the labour-power dimension:
“At high-tech companies, some of the most expensive money are the salaries of these developers. So, the idea of ‘we can replace even a chunk of them with AI’ — that’s really compelling. And we’re seeing this across all forms of white-collar labor right now. All the C-suite folks love the idea of being able to either lay people off because they can replace them with AI or threaten to do so. Even if you’re not replaced by AI, if you de-skill and devalue the job, it just gets easier for the owners to push you around.”
The devalue-the-job-as-labour-control mechanism is named here for the first time in the wiki’s source corpus.
Moving too fast — the maintenance argument
The minority-but-strongly-voiced concern: AI-written code may look correct now but produce subtle interactions and nasty bugs over years as adjacent code is added.
“When you write new code, it’s not just something you build and it stays up. You have to maintain it. As you add new things to it, adjacent to it that interact with it, there might be interactions that are bad or weird. So the code that the AI is writing might look good right now, but there’s a potential that down the line it could cause really difficult or nasty interactions with other parts of the code base.”
This is the deferred-cost-of-AI-coding argument — convergent with Böckeler’s Goldilocks-speed framing (speed pressure → corner-cutting → outages). Thompson’s vantage adds the time-deferred element: the bug isn’t visible now; it’ll show up at five years and be the next generation’s problem to debug.
The “skill we thought was ours” inversion — jagged-frontier expository anchor
Thompson’s clearest single statement of the jagged-frontier insight:
“Back in the ’80s, it seemed like chess was so hard to play there was no way a computer was going to do it. But it seemed like speaking — that’s easy. Surely a computer should be able to just speak. But it turned out that chess was actually easier for computers to do than to learn to speak. They conquered chess in the ’90s, and it took like two decades more to learn how to talk like a human. One of the things I think we see with AI is that things that we thought maybe were ‘oh, this is my big skill’ — yeah, that’s not really your skill. Your skill lies elsewhere.”
The chess/speech inversion is the wiki’s cleanest expository statement of jaggedness for a general audience — distinct from Dell’Acqua et al.’s empirical demonstration. Operationally for working developers: the things they thought defined their craft (writing the code) turn out to be the more-automatable part; the things they took for granted (communication, deciding what to build, setting priorities) turn out to be the less-automatable part.
The democratisation upside — software stops being precious
Thompson’s most-quoted prediction in the episode: software’s transition from precious and rare to Post-it note.
“At the highest level, what’s going to happen is that software stops being something that is precious and rare. It reminds me maybe a little bit of what happened with paper. Paper used to be incredibly rare. You go back to pre-revolutionary Pennsylvania and the average person had access to like four pieces of paper a year. And then suddenly it becomes a lot cheaper and all over the place and you’ve got weird things like Post-it notes, which are these really weird forms of paper that just transform the way that you live your life in this funny way.”
The mid-market opportunity Thompson surfaces: $15–50M companies running on Excel + Windows XP that can’t afford a 5-person software team but could afford one AI-augmented developer at $60–70k/year. “That’s just how much more productive I am as a software developer.” This is the democratisation-of-bespoke-software thesis — distinct from the platform-SaaS thesis the wiki’s enterprise sources mostly cover.
Worked analogy: word processors in the 1970s-80s → riot-girl zines and ugly birthday flyers in the 1990s. “If you’d said to someone in 1983 ‘what exactly is this word processor going to do?’ you would not have predicted riot-girl zines in 1996. That is kind of the transformation that’s about to hit us.”
Thompson’s stated frame: “more is not just more — more is different. Different behaviors emerge.” The proliferation of cheap-to-write software will catalyse uses we cannot currently predict.
